It is with great sadness that we recently learnt of the passing of Dr Tomisaku Kawasaki.

The Kawasaki Disease Foundation Australia expresses our heartfelt condolences to Dr Kawasaki’s family, friends, colleagues, and our Kawasaki communities across the globe.

Dr Kawasaki was the pioneer of Kawasaki disease, when he first described a number of cases of children that had presented with a particular pattern of symptoms in 1967. This pattern of symptoms lead to what we now know as “Kawasaki disease”.

Dr Kawasaki worked tirelessly for over 50 years to understand this mysterious illness. His passion and research inspired others, and lead to many advancements in knowledge, awareness and treatment of Kawasaki disease. His legacy will continue on around the world.

Dr Kawasaki was a remarkable man and we will always be thankful for not only his dedication to progressing Kawasaki disease awareness and research, but also for his kindness and generosity of his time and presence. He is admired and will be remembered by us all.

Farewell, our friend.
